How Much Does a Small Business Website Cost?

By Devan Kirkland, founder of Final Form · Last updated October 4, 2026

The short answer

Most small business websites cost between $1,000 and $5,000 when a freelancer or small studio builds them, or $100 to $300 a month on a monthly plan. Building it yourself costs $16 to $50 a month plus your time. Agencies usually start around $5,000.

Those are typical US ranges in 2026, and real quotes land outside them all the time. The number that matters is the total over two or three years, including everything you pay after launch. Here is how to work that out.

What does each option cost?

OptionTypical upfrontTypical ongoingBest for

What makes a website cost more?

  • Number of pages. Five focused pages cost less than twenty. Most local businesses need five to eight.
  • Who writes the words. Copywriting is often quoted separately. Ask whether it’s included.
  • Features. Online booking, payments and especially an online store add real work.
  • SEO. Some quotes include none. Others include research, page structure and Google Business Profile setup.
  • Photos. Your own job photos are free and usually work better than stock images.

What ongoing costs do people forget?

  • Domain name: usually $10 to $20 a year.
  • Hosting: anywhere from free to $50 a month, depending on who hosts it.
  • Business email: often $6 to $8 a month per person.
  • Changes: some designers charge hourly for every edit. Ask before you sign.
  • Software subscriptions: booking tools, review tools and CRMs bill separately.

Is it better to pay once or pay monthly?

Paying once costs less over time and you own the website. Paying monthly costs nothing upfront and spreads the cost, which helps when cash is tight. Add up 24 months of each option before you choose, and ask what happens to the website if you stop paying.

What should you ask before paying anyone?

  1. Do I own the website and the domain when it’s done?
  2. What exactly is included, and what costs extra?
  3. How many rounds of changes do I get?
  4. When will I see a first draft, and when does it launch?
  5. What SEO work is included?
  6. Who hosts it, and what does that cost each month?
  7. Can I see live websites you’ve built for businesses like mine?

How does Final Form price a website?

We quote one fixed price after a short application, so the number is based on your business and not a guess. You can pay once and own the site with hosting included, or pay monthly with nothing upfront. See the pricing page for how both plans work and what every build includes.
